It is documented that in 1938,Vernon Presley, together with his brother-in-law were jailed for about eight months in regard to an altered cheque. It was a difficult time for Elvis and his mother, who were to find themselves homeless, and forced to live with some relatives.
Elvis was, by 1942 attending Lawhorn School in Tupelo, and it’s recorded that he was quiet and well mannered.

So it was, that in 1947 one of Elvis’s heroes, Mississippi Slim invited a very nervous young country boy up on stage to sing with him. A legend was born.

In 1953 Elvis decided to make a record and went into Sun Records. The receptionist asked him what sort of songs he sang. He replied that he hadn’t any one style. After his demo, she made a note of his name as she thought he was a good ballad singer.
The next year, he tried auditioning at Songfellows, but he was turned down. By this time, Elvis was working driving trucks for a living.
His style in those days was considered to be “rockabilly” but he sang gospel and blues too. He was a man with infinate range in his voice.
In 1954 , the manager at Sun Records, Sam Phillips, was hoping to audition a singer when Marion Keisker remembered Elvis and played the demo. In spite of his nervousness, Mr Phillips set up a session in the studio. During a break, Elvis was messing about with the song“That’s All Right Momma” and it was quickly cut to disc.

In 1957 during the making of his film “Love me Tender” which was the first colour film Elvis did, his mother and father were used during an audience scene.
When his mother died the following year, Elvis said that he would never watch the film again.
In the 1963 film “It Happened at the World’s Fair” it’s believed that it’s Kurt Russell who has the part of a kid who runs on screen to kick Elvis on the shins.

By August 1955, Elvis had signed up with the now legendary “Colonel” Tom Parker, and agreed a deal with RCA Victor records. Elvis was still legally a minor, so his dad had to sign the contract for him.
At the beginning of January 1956 Elvis went into the recording studio in Nashville to make his first real recording. In spite of the usual musicians being with him, RCA decided to use Floyd Cramer and Chet Atkins. This session was to result in the world famous rendition of “Heartbreak Hotel”. And by April, it had reached number one, and had sold more than a million copies. The rest, as they always say, is history.
